Regional Weapons Carry Guidelines

The purpose of these guidelines is to establish agreed-upon best practices for the following situations:

  • Intervening with off-duty law enforcement officers who may be carrying a deadly weapon while visiting a hospital patient or receiving treatment as a patient, and

  • Intervening with patients and/or their family members who may be carrying a deadly weapon.

These guidelines are intended to balance respect for the rights of individuals who lawfully carry a weapon with the need to ensure the safety of emergency responders, law enforcement, healthcare providers, and the public. Commissioned law enforcement officers who are responding to a prehospital scene or medical facility in the line of duty are exempt from these guidelines.
